Is your car ready for winter?

To prevent getting into trouble during those cold winter months it is highly recommended to think ahead and prepare for the worst. Cars that refuse to start, cars that give up the ghost halfway the journey and so on. Any of those occasions is very unpleasant. So what to do to increase safety, comfort and peace of mind? To get a headstart, you need to check the following things:

Car battery

When temperatures get low your engine needs a little more help to get started. This means it will require the battery to give a higher amperage to get going. If the battery is already weak, it might not be able to give a sufficient amount of power. So then the motor will not be able to get going. So make sure your battery is up to the task.

This liquid protects your engine against freezing by heating up whilst circulating through the system. Make sure this never gets below the minimum level.

Ice scraper

Make sure you are able to get the ice off the windows before you drive off. Take that little bit of extra time to make sure you have the full view. Besides using an ice scraper, you can also use a spray with ⅓ water and ⅔ alcohol. This will defrost the existing ice and will not refreeze again.

Windscreen wipers and washer liquid

Make sure your windscreen wipers are in good condition. If they are ripped or cracked they will no longer be effective. Also, make sure there is a constant supply of washer liquid available. In the colder months of the year, this should be an antifreeze variety. Especially when the roads are salted, there will be a lot of dirt landing mainly on your front screen but also on your back one. And you will need plenty of washer liquid to keep your windows clean to ensure you have a clear view of what is happening around you.

Depending on the actual weather conditions where you are, using winter tires might be the best option for you. Make sure they have a minimum of 3-4mm thread. Tires with less than 3mm thread have an increased risk of aquaplaning and also have an increased braking distance.

It is of the utmost importance to make sure your headlights are clear and bright. So make sure the bulbs are bright. Replace them regularly to ensure the quality of light they produce. And make sure the lights are clean.

Jump leads and tow rope

It is highly recommended to have jump leads in the car. On the unfortunate occasion that your car refuses to start it is a life saver if someone can give you a jump start. If you are in dire straits, even after attempting the jump start, it is highly recommended to have a tow rope available too. So you can be pulled to a safe place, out of the way of other traffic or maybe even to the nearest garage.

After doing the aforementioned checks, you might find out it is necessary to replace certain parts. If so, keep in mind that it is not always necessary to buy new parts. There are options to keep the cost down.
